Understanding Financial Scenarios

Vanlife is all about freedom, but running out of money on the road is the ultimate freedom-killer.

Most budgeting apps only tell you what you did in the past. Vanlife Assistant is designed to predict the future. We built a powerful, institutional-grade financial engine right into the app to answer one simple question: “Exactly how long can I keep travelling before I run out of money?”

We call this number your Runway. To calculate it accurately, the app uses Scenarios and What-If Events. Here is how the magic works.

To predict the exact month and year your bank account will hit zero, the app’s Runway Engine looks at three things:

This is your starting line. The app calculates your total wealth by adding up all your positive accounts (Checking, Savings, Cash) and subtracting your liabilities (Credit Cards, Loans). 👉 See Accounts View

A Scenario is simply a monthly budget. You can create as many Scenarios as you want to represent different phases of your trip.

  • Example A (“Frugal Winter”): £200 for Fuel, £300 for Groceries, £0 for Campsites.
  • Example B (“Norway Summer”): £600 for Fuel, £500 for Groceries, £150 for Ferries.

You select one of these Scenarios to be your Active Plan. The app uses this Active Plan as your baseline “Burn Rate” to figure out how fast you are spending your Nest Egg.

Life on the road isn’t a flat monthly budget. Things break, and opportunities arise. What-If Events are specific, time-bound events that you inject into your timeline to see how they affect your Runway.

  • Example (Expense): “I need to buy a new £800 set of all-terrain tires next October.”
  • Example (Income): “I am going to work a seasonal fruit-picking job for 3 months this summer making £1,200 a month.”
  • Example (Known future Events): “I am going to retire and receive my pension on this date.”

When you look at the Runway Horizon Chart on your Money dashboard, the app is doing millions of calculations per second.

It takes your current Nest Egg, subtracts your Active Plan’s budget every single month, drops in your What-If expenses exactly when they are scheduled to happen, and draws a beautiful chart showing your money slowly descending until it hits the dreaded zero line.

📈 Advanced Physics: Interest & Inflation

Section titled “📈 Advanced Physics: Interest & Inflation”

Because some vanlifers travel for years at a time, simple math isn’t enough. The Runway Engine is so smart that it even calculates macro-economics!

  • If you tell the app your savings account gets 4% interest, it will compound that interest into your Runway.
  • It also calculates average global Inflation, meaning it knows that a tank of diesel will cost slightly more in year three of your trip than it does today! 👉 For the nerds, read The Math Behind Scenario Trajectories.

Don’t want to build a complex 10-year financial model? You don’t have to.

At the top of the Money dashboard, tap the Quick What-If (magic wand) button. This lets you throw temporary ideas at the wall: “What if I buy a £300 paddleboard today? How many days of travel will that cost me?” The app will instantly tell you: “That paddleboard will cost you exactly 8 days of your Runway.” It is the ultimate tool for stopping impulse purchases!

Now that you understand how the engine thinks, let’s actually build a plan. 👉 Check out How to build your first What-If Scenario.
